Minneapolis-raised, Ukrainian immigrant, Eugine Roszo is an imaginative storyteller sharing his artistry through the expressive world of folk rock. Soft electric guitar echoes combined with haunting lyric melodies and a dynamic vocal range, all come together for a sound that is reminiscent of the alternative music explosion of the early 90’s. Roszo’s songs resonate with many of the sentiments from the 60’s and 70’s folk movement and his performances are intimate and thought provoking, offering listeners the experience of seeing their world through the lens of an outsider.
Growing up in Northeast Minneapolis, Roszo’s songs tell stories of his upbringing, such as in the form of a song called “Windom Park”, which recounts youthful early days spent at Pillsbury Elementary School. Other songs delve into social commentary and explore themes of immigration, vulnerability, as well as the feelings of connection to the city and the Mississippi river. A well rounded background in other art forms, such as painting, dance, and martial arts has had a noticeably interesting effect on his creative process, lending to a sort of kinesthetic lyricism in some songs. The loss of his mother 10 years ago had a profound impact on Roszo’s musical journey, and as such, he is not one to shy away from diving into much deeper content as well.
Roszo has studied songwriting under Judy Stakee at her workshop in San Francisco, undergoes vocal coaching from local Opera singer Justin Spenner, and continues to study guitar under Minnesota favorite, Joe Flip. Eugine is also earning production credit studying under the mentorship of local composer and producer Will Van De Crommert. Having recently developed a brand new music studio and practice space as of 2019, one can be sure to hear some exciting new projects from Roszo in the coming years.
Roszo annually attends the CDbaby DIY conference and has volunteered with the Minnesota Music Coalition. He has a monthly residency first Saturday of each month at the Underground Music Cafe in Falcon Heights and has been seen as a regular at the Coffee Shop Northeast. Eugine actively donates his talent to the community and attends fundraisers for various Twin Cities Non-profit organizations. Upcoming engagements in 2019 include new song demos, an EP and music video. Roszo is available to be booked for house concerts, private events, and weddings, offering a tasteful mix of cover songs and original content.
Some of Roszo’s top musical influences include: David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Led Zepplin, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchel, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Tim and Jeff Buckley, Etta James, Prince, Radiohead, Hozier, Chris Cornell, and Perfume Genius.
